NACS vs. CCS vs. J1772: The Complete EV Adapter Compatibility Guide

Which adapter you need depends on your vehicle's port and the network you're charging at — not on brand loyalty. One matrix, every combination, and the direction-naming confusion cleared up for good.

Three connector standards cover nearly every public charger in the US: NACS (Tesla’s connector, now standardized as SAE J3400), CCS (the older DC fast standard most non-Tesla EVs used through 2024), and J1772 (the AC Level 2 standard almost every EV port includes in some form). Which adapter you need is a function of two things only — your vehicle’s port and the station’s connector — not the brand of either. Here is the complete matrix.

The one entry worth pausing on: a CCS-port vehicle needs nothing extra at a J1772 Level 2 station. The CCS1 connector is physically the SAE J1772 5-pin AC connector with two additional DC pins added below it — so a CCS car’s charge port already accepts a J1772 plug directly, using just the top portion. This surprises people who assume “different connector” means “always needs an adapter.” It doesn’t, for AC charging.

The CHAdeMO row is the one hard “no,” and the reason is protocol, not shape. NACS and CCS1 both use ISO 15118 high-level communication over powerline carrier on the control pilot pin — the shared digital language is exactly why a passive adapter can bridge them at all. CHAdeMO uses CAN bus over its own dedicated data pins. There is no translation path between the two that passive adapter hardware can implement, which is why no CHAdeMO-to-NACS DC adapter exists at any price.

Why “NACS to CCS” and “CCS to NACS” don’t reliably mean what you’d expect

Before the two sections below, the single most important thing to understand about adapter names: the direction in the product name is not a reliable indicator of what the adapter does. There is no enforced convention, and the major players disagree.

Many publishers and retailers name the adapter vehicle port first: a “NACS-to-CCS adapter” is for a NACS-port car going to a CCS station. Other publishers, and Tesla itself, name it station connector first. Tesla sells the adapter that lets its own NACS-port cars charge at CCS1 stations as the “CCS1 to NACS Adapter” — the exact inverse of the vehicle-first convention, for the same physical object.

So both search phrases are used, in both directions, by credible sources. Don’t buy on the name.

Instead, identify the adapter physically. Every DC adapter has two ends:

  • A male plug that inserts into your vehicle’s charge port. This end must match your car.
  • A female receptacle that accepts the station’s cable. This end must match the station.

Read the listing’s compatibility line and look at the photos of both ends. If a listing only gives you a direction name and no photo of both ends, treat that as a red flag — it’s a common pattern on counterfeit and grey-market listings.

NACS to CCS adapter

Who needs one: you have a NACS-port vehicle — a Tesla, or a 2025+ model that ships NACS natively — and you want to DC fast charge at a CCS station. That means Electrify America, EVgo, ChargePoint DC fast, or any NEVI-funded site, all of which are required to carry CCS connectors.

What it does: converts the connector geometry and passes the ISO 15118 control signals through. It does not convert voltage or current. Your charging speed is still capped by whichever is lower — your vehicle’s DC acceptance rate or the station’s output. An adapter never makes a session faster and, on a well-built unit, shouldn’t make it meaningfully slower.

Naming warning: this is the product Tesla sells as the “CCS1 to NACS Adapter.” Third-party sellers list the identical function as a “NACS to CCS adapter” or a “Tesla to CCS adapter.” All three names, same job.

CCS to NACS adapter

Who needs one: you have a CCS1-port vehicle — most non-Tesla EVs sold in North America through 2024 — and you want to charge at a Tesla Supercharger or another NACS station.

The critical difference from the section above: hardware alone does not get you in. Supercharger access requires your vehicle to be manufacturer-approved on Tesla’s side, and the approved adapter is frequently the automaker’s own. Buying a physically compatible adapter for an unapproved vehicle will not produce a charging session. Confirm your specific model is on the approved list before you buy anything.

The adapter question is shrinking, but slower than the headlines suggest — and the gap between “my brand adopted NACS” and “my car has a NACS port” is where most of the confusion now lives.

A note on certification

Every adapter recommendation on this site links back to certification guidance, deliberately. An adapter carrying DC fast-charging current is a different risk category than one carrying AC Level 2 current — the amp ratings, UL listings, and counterfeit risks differ enough that we treat it as a prerequisite, not a footnote. UL 2252, published in March 2025, is the first standard written specifically for this product category, which means a great deal of the adapter stock still circulating predates any dedicated safety standard at all. Frequently asked questions

Which adapter do I need?

Two facts determine it: the port on your car and the connector on the station. If your car has a NACS port and the station is CCS, you need a NACS-to-CCS adapter. If your car has a CCS1 port and the station is a Supercharger, you need a CCS-to-NACS adapter and manufacturer approval. If your car has a CCS1 port and the station is J1772 Level 2, you need nothing.

Do I need an adapter to use a Tesla Supercharger in a non-Tesla EV?

It depends on your port, not your brand. A non-Tesla with a native NACS port plugs straight in. A CCS1-port car needs a CCS-to-NACS adapter and must be manufacturer-approved for Supercharger access. At a Magic Dock site, no adapter is needed either way.

Can I use a NACS-to-CCS adapter at Electrify America?

Yes. Electrify America stations carry CCS connectors, so a NACS-port vehicle with a NACS-to-CCS adapter can charge there. EA has also been adding native NACS cables at some sites, in which case no adapter is needed — but NACS availability varies location to location, so verify before routing to a specific station on a tight trip.

Does a CCS car need an adapter for J1772 Level 2 charging?

No. The CCS1 connector is the J1772 AC connector with two DC pins added below it, so a CCS car’s port accepts a J1772 plug directly.

Can an older Nissan Leaf with CHAdeMO charge at a Supercharger?

No, and no adapter will change that. CHAdeMO communicates over CAN bus while NACS and CCS use ISO 15118 over powerline carrier. There is no passive hardware that translates between them.

My automaker announced it’s switching to NACS. Does my car have a NACS port?

Probably not, unless it’s a 2025 or newer model. Adoption announcements happened in 2023; native ports arrived model by model starting in 2025 and are still rolling out through 2027. The model year matters more than the brand.

Does an adapter slow down my charging?

A well-built adapter doesn’t meaningfully reduce speed. It converts connector geometry and passes control signals through — it can’t increase voltage or current beyond what the station and your vehicle already negotiate between them. Your ceiling is whichever of those two is lower, with or without the adapter.
